5 Days for 2005

The ever-growing popularity of Londonderry’s Old Home Day has turned the event into a five-day celebration. This year, the event is scheduled to begin Wednesday and finish Sunday.

Friendship and Community

The initial idea for Old Home Day was to create a kind of family reunion for the town, similar to a town meeting but without budgets or controversy. Old Home Day is time of recognition and remembrance, a chance to make new acquaintances and to renew old ones.

Old Home Day was developed so a community could preserve its character. Londonderry has followed that tradition. By preserving Londonderry’s historic inheritance, open space, and character, we have established a community that is a wonderful place in which to raise our children.

These seem like simple things, but the reality is that most of us spend far more time with our careers than we do with our neighbors, and the chance to visit with friends is a rare treat. The celebration of Old Home Day is a testimony to the spirit of community that still lives on in Londonderry. Our large community is truly is a small town at heart. In the heart of Old Home Day, if you feel like you belong, then you’ve come to the right place.

New Event at Old Home Day!

The 106th Londonderry Old Home Day is fast approaching and the excitement surrounding the event is beginning. Just wanted to let everyone know that our final brochure is almost golden and will be printed and distributed to every home in Londonderry. Look for this mailing in early August. This year we have a new event on Wednesday, August 17th: a concert for our enlightened ones. It will feature the Windham Swing Band. The swing band plays concerts, dances, and functions throughout the area. The Swing Band has full big band instrumentation including Lauren Meehan as vocalist. Its repertoire includes swing “standards” and other big band arrangements.

Watch the website for updates and information regarding the town’s most anticipated celebration.

Help our Local Food Pantry!

Summer is such a wonderful time of the year. We spend in with friends and families around pools cooking, and eating at our wonderful barbecues. It is a time of fun, love, and happiness. We often don’t have time to remember the less fortunate.

When the holiday season is in full swing people want to do something nice and remember those in the community that need assistance. We donate to the homeless, our seniors, our churches, and our food pantry. The need is there year round and not just at holiday time.

The Old Home Day Committee would like to ask all residents of Londonderry to bring non-perishable items to the concert on Friday night before the fireworks. All of the proceeds will be donated to the local food pantry here in Londonderry. The pantry is located at St. Jude’s Parish on Mammoth Road and helps anyone that is in need.

Please Donate.

Fun and History!

Old Home Day became an annual event that both newcomers and older town residents looked forward to eagerly each year. In 1971 the Londonderry Historical Society was host to historical societies from all over the state. This year, the Historical Society will again be offering visits to the Morrison House Museum free of charge from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 20th, for tours of the 1760 Morrison House, 1859 Parmenter Barn and c. 1840 Clark Blacksmith Shop. As they did last year, the Historical Society will again be hosting the 3rd New Hampshire Regiment on the grounds of the museum. The group will be conducting a colonial encampment which consists of pitched tents providing a cooking demonstration, military drills, cannon firings and possibly a doctor giving a demonstration all under tents. The drills and cannon firings will be happening throughout the day. The 3rd NH Regiment will also be marching in the Old Home Day parade.

The most Important Rule of the Parade

The Old Home Day Celebration parade brings joy and excitement to many spectators who line Mammoth Road, but I bet you have no idea how many people are involved in the actual parade. With all the bands and groups the parade draws about 1,000 participates. That is a lot of noise, screaming and people in one location. That is why it is very important that the rules of the parade are followed. The most important tidbit of information is there is never any parking for anyone at the Middle School. The parade is staged and begins at the Middle School. The parade needs every inch of space in the Middle School parking lots for line-up anyone parking there will be towed or very harshly asked to leave. When dropping off your child who is participating in the parade try to car pool, and designate and adult leader to be at the parade by 8:30 to watch over your child. The volunteers are too busy to keep tabs on your children. They are responsible for the line-up and coordination of over 1,000.

If you should have further questions, go to the website under events, visit the parade link; you will find all of the rules of the parade. We want everyone to have a safe and happy Old Home Day Celebration.

We All Scream for Ice Cream

Today the Old Home Day Committee sponsored an ice cream social for Mrs. Slozak’s class at Matthew Thornton. Her class using their great imaginations came up with the idea of “Apple Fever” as the 106th Old Home Day Celebration’s theme.

The 17 member Old Home Day Committee had to choose between 7 different possibilities for this year’s celebration theme. All of the ideas were from our very own 4th graders here in Londonderry. We received possible themes from all of our elementary schools. I want to thank all of the classes at South, North, and the additional classes from Matthew Thornton that forwarded your wonderful theme ideas.

The kids were so funny. They sure ate a lot of ice cream. We had chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. I think the cherries; whip cream, chocolate sauce, jimmies, and M&Ms made the sundaes awesome.

The 3rd graders should start thinking about next year; some lucky class out there will be next year’s winner.

A Job Well Done!

Thanks to our wonderful local Boy Scout Troop 426 the Old Home Day Celebration now has a new staircase for our reviewing stand. Paul Carbone’s Eagle Scout project was to construct access stairs with railings for the Old Home Day Parade Reviewing Stand and he also designed a handicapped, and elderly viewing area for our spectators.

Paul constructed a portable wooden stairs to allow our guests to walk the ground to the deck level of the reviewing stand. The stairs were designed to be tipped onto an integral wheeled base to allow for easier transport for storage between events. Prior to Paul’s stairs dignitaries and elected officials used a stepladder as access to the reviewing stand. This was extremely unsafe and not easily climbed by everyone.

The Old Home Day committee wants to give Paul a big thank you for his hard work on our stairs, and for his belief in community involvement. Thanks to all you scouts everywhere, it is so nice to see young adults giving back to the community.

Londonderry Old Home Day Theme

The theme for the 2005 Londonderry’s Old Home Day is “Apple Fever” thanks to Mrs. Slozak’s fourth grade class at Matthew Thornton. The class came up with the theme and as a thank you from the Old Home Day Committee, they will be eating ice cream on Tuesday, May 24th.

This is the second year that the theme has been selected by one of our 4th grade classes. This has become a Old Home Day tradition, and we hope that it lasts for many years. It is important that our children feel that they are part of this community event.
