Old Home Day in 1955 was a straightforward affair. Needless to say, Batman never made it.

“The exhibit of antiques and flowers at the Grange Hall and the tour of Londonderry will take place Saturday, August 27, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.,” one press account reads.

The next day, there was a townwide church service at 10:45 a.m., followed by a potluck lunch. Cold drinks provided, bring your own table service.

Originally conceived in 1899 by then-Gov. Frank Rollins, Old Home Day was created to encourage those who had moved out of New Hampshire to return home and renew friendships with former neighbors.

Since its modest beginnings, Old Home Day in Londonderry has since evolved into a nearly weeklong celebration that, while still encompassing tradition, now takes on a contemporary sheen.

This year’s celebration also honors resident Hank Peterson, the longtime maple sugar and syrup producer, who will take his place of honor as the Old Home Day Grand Marshal for 2006’s parade, set for Saturday.

The Derry News honors Londonderry’s longtime tradition of bringing its community together and offers a special pull-out supplement with Old Home Day information, booth listing, schedule of events, and everything our readers need to know about Old Home Day.

Events like Old Home Day help market a town and its civic organizations, but they also set the stage for residents to meet their neighbors, organizers say.

Bandstand ready to go!

Tuesday was a busy day on the common, you would think something special was going to happen…

The grass was mowed, the firemen, (my favorite kind of men) put up the “lost, but now its found” bunting.  Shady Hill made the Bandstand a little more shady (make that a lot more) and ImageAbility popped in with posters and displays.

By the way the posters and displays show the $1000 sponsors, very little room left this year!  If you get a chance say thank you for supporting our great community Londonderry, New Hampshire.

The list of all the sponsors can be found HERE

Old Home Week Annual Meeting Part 2

President’s Message

Another year of Old Home Week activities in New Hampshire has passed into history and we feel that the record is very satisfactory in view of conditions that have existed.   A good number of communities held some fitting observance and in spite of the conditions caused by war the interest and loyalty to the cause was as good as ever.  The restrictions on travel had the expected effect of reducing the number attending but we know many more would have come if it had been possible.

The method of observing Old Home Week that seems to be gaining in favor is the Sunday observance.  We believe more communities are having an Old Home Sunday service each year and this year we wish every church would dedicate one Sunday service to the observance of Old Home Week.  There are also many family reunions throughout the year and these are very appropriate as an Old Home Week observance.  The Granges in New Hampshire have done much to promote Old Home Week and we are pleased to note their continued interest in the work.

As long as the dark clouds of war hang over our land we can only hope to continue about as we have done for the past year.  We wish to extend our thanks to the churches and Granges and the many interested citizens who have contributed to the proper observance of Old Home Week in 1942 and urge continued support in the future.

The annual meeting for 1943 will be held in Concord on Monday, June7, ant 10:30 A. M. and we wish every local Old Home Week Association could be represented.  Remember that our responsibility is greater than ever till peas shall return.

Arthur W. McDaniel, President

To be continued shortly by the Old Home Day Pup this historic look at Old Home Day in 1942 come from historic records.  Londonderry, New Hampshire has held Old Home day for 107 consecutive years.

Annual Meeting of the State Old Home Week Association

The OHD Answer Pup will be taking a look at a different time over the next few weeks.  Londonderry has held Old Home Day for 107 consecutive years.

The annual meeting was held in the General Committee Room in the State House at 10:30 in the morning.  Arthur W. McDaniel the president of the association was the chair today.  A prayer was offered up by A.L. Felker.  The meeting was not very well attended since the restrictions on the use of automobiles was in place.

Officers were elected and the first order of business regarding the authorization of radio addresses was approved and the President and Secretary clearly instructed to arrange for these to be created.

At this time it was about 10:45 in the morning Monday, June 3rd 1942
