Friendship and Community

The initial idea for Old Home Day was to create a kind of family reunion for the town, similar to a town meeting but without budgets or controversy. Old Home Day is time of recognition and remembrance, a chance to make new acquaintances and to renew old ones.

Old Home Day was developed so a community could preserve its character. Londonderry has followed that tradition. By preserving Londonderry’s historic inheritance, open space, and character, we have established a community that is a wonderful place in which to raise our children.

These seem like simple things, but the reality is that most of us spend far more time with our careers than we do with our neighbors, and the chance to visit with friends is a rare treat. The celebration of Old Home Day is a testimony to the spirit of community that still lives on in Londonderry. Our large community is truly is a small town at heart. In the heart of Old Home Day, if you feel like you belong, then you’ve come to the right place.

New Event at Old Home Day!

The 106th Londonderry Old Home Day is fast approaching and the excitement surrounding the event is beginning. Just wanted to let everyone know that our final brochure is almost golden and will be printed and distributed to every home in Londonderry. Look for this mailing in early August. This year we have a new event on Wednesday, August 17th: a concert for our enlightened ones. It will feature the Windham Swing Band. The swing band plays concerts, dances, and functions throughout the area. The Swing Band has full big band instrumentation including Lauren Meehan as vocalist. Its repertoire includes swing “standards” and other big band arrangements.

Watch the website for updates and information regarding the town’s most anticipated celebration.

106 Years of Fun

Londonderry is one of the few towns in the state that have celebrated Old Home Day continuously since 1899. On August 17-21, Londonderry will have its fantastic 106th Old Home Day! All are welcome!

Remind your relatives to come back and celebrate with the Londonderry, NH community. Keep this great tradition strong and vibrant!

Who Invented Old Home Day?

Governor Frank Collins invented Old Home Day in 1899. His idea was to throw a party for everyone who was or who had ever been a New Hampshire resident, along with descendants of former residents.

At the time Gov. Rollins realized that New Hampshire was losing its population during and after the Civil War. Many residents were moving west.

Communities across the state celebrated, including a strong turnout in Londonderry. Concord had a large celebration.

Students Cool Apple Fever with Ice Cream

“Apple Fever” – what a great slogan for Old Home Day! It was brought to you by the creative students in Pat Slozak’s 4th grade class. Alissa Rogers came up with “Apple Fever” and the students voted it the winner!

To celebrate, the students chose an ice cream party. Old Home Day chair Kathy Wagner, along with Steve Young, provided the ice cream and the fixin’s.

Here is a photo of Pat Slozak and her fourth grade class.

Help our Local Food Pantry!

Summer is such a wonderful time of the year. We spend in with friends and families around pools cooking, and eating at our wonderful barbecues. It is a time of fun, love, and happiness. We often don’t have time to remember the less fortunate.

When the holiday season is in full swing people want to do something nice and remember those in the community that need assistance. We donate to the homeless, our seniors, our churches, and our food pantry. The need is there year round and not just at holiday time.

The Old Home Day Committee would like to ask all residents of Londonderry to bring non-perishable items to the concert on Friday night before the fireworks. All of the proceeds will be donated to the local food pantry here in Londonderry. The pantry is located at St. Jude’s Parish on Mammoth Road and helps anyone that is in need.

Please Donate.

Wanna race?

In the 1960s and 1970s Old Home Day (OHD) evolved into a bigger event, according to longtime Londonderry, NH resident Reed Clark. He emphasized that OHD had a “very little parade and very few booths.”

At Matthew Thornton school, boys and girls competed in egg races and spoon races. The youngsters competed in running races such as the 100-yard and 250-yard dashes, and two longer races. You can imagine the fun and excitement this involved!

Reed said proudly, “One year my four kids won all four events! There was a headline in the paper about it.”

Fun and History!

Old Home Day became an annual event that both newcomers and older town residents looked forward to eagerly each year. In 1971 the Londonderry Historical Society was host to historical societies from all over the state. This year, the Historical Society will again be offering visits to the Morrison House Museum free of charge from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 20th, for tours of the 1760 Morrison House, 1859 Parmenter Barn and c. 1840 Clark Blacksmith Shop. As they did last year, the Historical Society will again be hosting the 3rd New Hampshire Regiment on the grounds of the museum. The group will be conducting a colonial encampment which consists of pitched tents providing a cooking demonstration, military drills, cannon firings and possibly a doctor giving a demonstration all under tents. The drills and cannon firings will be happening throughout the day. The 3rd NH Regiment will also be marching in the Old Home Day parade.

BUSINESS SPONSOR, HELP??

Dear Local Business Owner / Manager,

The Londonderry Old Home Day Committee is finalizing plans for its 106th Old Home Day Celebration (8/17 to 8/21/05) and has officially kicked off its fund-raising campaign. Some highlights of this traditional old-fashioned event consist of seniors night, live entertainment & music, 5k Road Race, a spectacular fireworks display and a gigantic parade. In addition, local non-profit organizations benefit by increasing community awareness and fundraising through sponsoring food booths, games and activities.

The celebration attracts over 5,000 people annually. It continues to receive tremendous support from local business community. Business sponsorship is a successful way of gaining exposure for your product or services. Most importantly, business sponsorship demonstrates your commitment to preserving our reputation of still being a small rural agricultural New England community.

There are many different ways in which your business can get involved. You could sponsor a float in the parade, purchase booth space, donate free products and services or provide a cash donation. If you need a sponsorship registration form (contact me) and a list describing different sponsor categories (attached) call me. If your business is interested in becoming a sponsor than please complete a registration form (call me) and submit it as soon as possible. The committee will publicly recognize all sponsors on the Town’s local access television station, website, promotional material, event site signage, parade banners and local media.

If you have any questions or require additional information then please feel free to contact me anytime at (603) 425-6997 or email me at, baldasaro@adelphia.net. On behalf of the Londonderry Old Home day Committee, I thank you for your serious consideration and would like to extend a personal invitation to you and your staff to attend this unique celebration.
